ylan entered the room without knocking, his eyes on his twin.

“What happened? Quinn asked me to come urgently.” His eyes scanned Nolan for any injury, but he seemed quite all right, though he was shaking.

“He’s in shock.” Mr. Selwood said from where he was leaning against a desk.

Dylan sat down next to Nolan and put an arm around him. “What shock? What did you say to him?”

“I wasn’t even in the room.” Mr. Selwood said. “Quinn? If you could just playback what happened?”

A screen appeared before Dylan and he watched stupefied as the cut on Nolan’s finger healed without leaving even a scar.

“What... how...” words failed him as he stared at Mr. Selwood. Nolan shuddered, his whole body shaking and Dylan hugged him. Nolan was crying, his face hidden, and Dylan held him.

“What happened to him?” Dylan asked.

“He was captured by Thaxter who injected him with the immortality drug, presumably to ensure that he would not die under torture.” Mr. Selwood said quietly.

“Oh.”

How inadequate.

He looked at Nolan. Immortal. Like their father. At least, he wouldn’t need to worry about Nolan’s safety any more. Fat chance, his mind mocked him. Worrying about each other was built into them, it was part of them, perhaps it was in their DNA, but he could no longer stop worrying about his twin than he could stop breathing. Both came naturally.

“It is not a tragedy.” Mr. Selwood offered.

“How can you say that!” Nolan raised his head and glared at Mr. Selwood through his tears. “This is the worst thing! To live forever when no one I love are going to? How can you think this is good?”

“Your father’s an immortal.” Mr. Selwood said. “He never regretted it.”

“I’m sure he does now.” Nolan said, shocking Dylan. He had never heard his twin speak in that tone before.

“Maybe,” Mr. Selwood said, maintaining his calm. “But you should know that there’s nothing to be done now. So, you can either accept what you are and learn to deal with it, or sit there and wallow in self-pity. It’s your choice. Call me when you’re ready to be reasonable. I need to go to my company. Quinn?”

Dylan sighed as Mr. Selwood vanished. The man had a point, but he could have been patient. Nolan’s been through a lot.

“He’s gone.” he said unnecessarily.

Nolan gulped and gave a harsh laugh. “I didn’t tell him,” he said.

“Tell him what?” Dylan demanded. “That you’re drooling after him?” He regretted the words instantly. “I’m sorry,” he said as Nolan shrugged off his arm from around his shoulder. “I shouldn’t have said it. I’m really sorry.”

Nolan nodded. “I know.” he said. “It’s okay.”

He put his head on Dylan’s shoulder. “I’m scared.” he said, his voice low. “I’m so scared of living forever, of having to live without you or Ash, but especially you... You’ve always been there... always, and now... I can’t... I can’t imagine what I’ll do when I have to be without you...”

Dylan hugged him. “I’m here now.” he said.

It was so inadequate, but he didn’t know what to say.
